Honey pot ants represents a compound name for many un-identical species but sharing same behaviors. Honey pot ants therefore serves as the camels of the ants world. They inhabit in very dry locations worldwide, but commonly in the deserts of Australia that often experience the scarcity of water and food over a long time period. For survival, honey pot ants comprise of a special storage tanks to store up anything liquids. The storage tanks being referred to here are unique worker ants known as replete.
Whenever there is abundant of food and other resources, these replete drink additional food in liquid form such that they appears balloon-like. Thereafter, they actively withdraw from the ceiling of the nest and come out during scarcities. Anytime the colony is lacking food, the rest of the worker encourages the replete to vomit their food reserve so that others can share from it. In fact replete are synonymous with liquid food in storage.
Erroneously, honey pot ants could be judged to be feeding on sweets just because it is called honey pot ants. All the same replete have the capability of storing fluids from animal prey. They are around 6m to 12m long and very dark reddish brown color. The distended abdomen of the storage ants have the appearance of amber heads having a short dark strips. They can easily be found in the deserts of Arizona as well as New Mexico. They love eating nectar and many more sugar-like plant secretions, aphids honeydew and insects.
Diumal. These workers gather nectar and honey dew fully stored in their belly till they arrive at their nests. On getting there, it is regurgitated for their larvae and other sister ants to feed upon. A lot of them act like a store house, by taking very big quantity of honey and reserve it from digestion in gaster area of the abdomen. The colonies of the honey pot ants usually witness regional disputes, a lot of which are ironed out by display. On the other hand when a colony is physically tougher, it will end up in battle as the bigger contender fights on until they penetrate the nest of the opponents, destroying all workers as well as the queen. Meanwhile, they will arrest the larvae, pupae and also the inexperienced workers and replete. Hence, they drag back to dominate nests and invariably turn to be member of the colony.
Gaster, being the part of abdomen may greatly be distended to keep food. Hence, the already forceful stretch skin finds it hard to contract back which will eventually lead to their death after finished the supply of food.
Honey pot ants are just among the uncountable number of honey pots ants discovered in dry or desert locations of Australia, Africa or North America. This honey is a sugary solution that be secured by the ants from aphids, nectar and in the United States. Again, they can be found from the secretion of a gall growing over little oak trees. Their way of food storage grew in deserts where the origin of food is unavailable for the extended periods of draught. Honey storage ants are reputed to be a food item by the localized individuals.
Honey pot ants form mating swarms virtually at the end of the rains. Thereafter, the immature males die afterward while the female remove their own wings through rubbing their back legs severely on them. Following this, they run here and there in an attempt to find where to burrow so that they can lay their eggs. In the process, so many serve as food by predators.
Socially, they are very organized and function effectively. Nearly all the colonies have a queen coupled with several daughters of hers. The worker ants may vary in sizes and this is the bases of sharing tasks. The largest ones could develop into honey pots.
