Getting Rid of Ants in the Kitchen
October 11, 2010
Ants are one of the most stubborn insect infestations that you can get in your house, and the kitchen is one of the most vulnerable places for ant invasions. Why? Because many varieties of ants love sugar, and the place where you have the most of it in your house is in the kitchen. If you can control how much sugar is out where ants can sense it, then you will have a lot fewer ant infestations.
However, what to do if you have ants in your kitchen? They’re harder to get out than you might think. Here is a list of remedies that different people have found effective in the fight against the ants.
Cinnamon is one weapon you can use to get rid of ants in the kitchen. This seems a bit ironic, because cinnamon is also sweet, but cinnamon’s sweetness does not come from sugar. Cinnamon has a couple of other benefits as well – it gives your kitchen a homey scent, and it’s a lot safer for your pets and your kids than pesticides – or even just plain Raid. Sprinkle it around your kitchen, and use a baster to drop it into all of the nooks and cracks in your kitchen, and down behind the countertops.
Ever wonder why ants always follow the same line in and out of your kitchen? They’ve laid down a trail that they can sense with their antennae – which work a lot more like our noses than our eyes. It’s not just enough to kill the ants that you see, because they have friends back in their colony, and they will just come and follow the same trail. You have to get rid of the trail too. One home remedy that has worked is Fantastic! Heavy Duty cleaner. Spray the cleaner along the ant trail, wipe up the ants, and the trail will vanish too.
If you’ve tried some of the home remedies but still have ants in the kitchen, then there’s always Terro Ant Killer. The vast majority of reviews about Terro are positive. Here’s how it works: ants pick up the liquid and eat it, and they take it back to the colony, where they eat it too. Once the queen dies, you’re all set. Warning: you’ll get a swarm of ants around the liquid at first, but then the whole colony will die.
